Cytokeratin 10 (CK10) is a protein encoded by the KRT10 gene on chromosome 17q21.2 in humans. It typically consists of around 584 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 56 kDa. Post-translational modifications of CK10 include phosphorylation, glycosylation, and the formation of disulfide bonds, which contribute to its structural stability and functional diversity. CK10 is primarily an intracellular protein, forming intermediate filaments that provide structural support and integrity to epithelial cells. CK10 is a major component of the cytoskeleton in the suprabasal layers of the epidermis, contributing to the skin’s mechanical strength and barrier function. Additionally, CK10 plays a role in keratinocyte differentiation and epithelial homeostasis.
Altered CK10 expression has been associated with several skin disorders, including ichthyosis, epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and palmoplantar keratoderma.
