Thyroglobulin (TG) is primarily expressed in the thyroid gland. It is produced by thyroid follicular cells and stored in the thyroid colloid as a reservoir for thyroid hormone synthesis. This large glycoprotein serves as a precursor in the synthesis of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Thyroglobulin is not directly associated with diseases, but its measurement in blood can be used as a tumor marker in thyroid cancer. Moreover, monitoring thyroglobulin levels after thyroidectomy can help detect the recurrence of thyroid cancer.
Antibodies against thyroglobulin, particularly immunoassays, are used in clinical settings to measure serum TG levels. In thyroid cancer, monitoring changes in serum thyroglobulin levels can aid in the detection of residual or recurrent disease.
